Medical Detection Dogs is dedicated to training dogs in the detection and recognition of human diseases by odour.
Once trained, these amazing dogs either work on groundbreaking research programmes as Bio-Detection Dogs, or as Medical Alert Assistance Dogs - where they are partnered with an individual with a life-threatening medical condition.
Since 2008, Medical Detection Dogs has trained over 150 Medical Alert Assistance Dogs for people with life-threatening conditions, improving their lives immeasurably.
Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are specially trained for people suffering from serious medical conditions such as Addison's disease, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Type 1 diabetes and life-threatening nut allergies.
The charity's aim is to increase the number of Medical Alert Assistance Dogs they place with clients every year, in order to bring down the waiting list and offer support to more people. In addition, Medical Detection Dogs are conducting research into canine ability to detect new conditions for their dogs to support.
The charity believes anyone living in the UK with a complex life-threatening condition should have the opportunity to have a Medical Alert Assistance Dog and receive ongoing aftercare support no matter where they live in the UK.
Thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery, this vision will become a reality. Funding will allow them to deliver work at a truly national level and save many more lives throughout the UK.
A new network of qualified, regional training staff will allow them the opportunity to not only effectively support existing seriously ill clients and their families, but also provide the chance to engage with many more people living with a complex condition who could benefit from help.
For many people, Medical Detection Dogs are their last chance to lead a more normal life. The charity would like to give them that opportunity - People's Postcode Lottery players are helping to make that happen.
